KEYWORD OPTIMIZATION

All of these areas play a large role in search engine optimization.

TITLE TAGS

Since the Title Tag comes right after the head tag, this is where the search engines will begin their search of your site content.  It's important to choose a title that describes your site content, but that title should also contain keywords or keyword phrases.  "Home", or "My Home Page" is not an appropriate page name.  If your site is about "Dogs", you should take full advantage of that and give your site a name that includes the word "dogs".  It is best to keep your title tag to 60 characters or less.

WHAT ARE "STOP WORDS"?

"Stop Words" are words such as "the", "to", "and", "be", prepositions & articles that often appear in sentences and paragraphs, but when in a "stand alone" position, mean little.  To save time, the search engines don't "stop" to look for these words.  This means if you use these words in a title or in keyword phrases, you're wasting the allotted character spaces for your title.  These words won't enhance your placement, and could even hamper it!  For similar reasons, you may want to avoid common terms such as "web", "internet", and other words that have a general definition.  Consider choosing words that are unique to your site and uncommon.

DESCRIPTION TAGS

Different search engines apply slightly different rules to description meta tags.  These may vary in length from 150 to 250 characters, so it is probably wise to keep your description meta tags to somewhere in between.

KEYWORD TAGS

When working on your home page, remember that search engines start at the top of the page, and some search engines only crawl your home page.

This may be the only chance you have to get those keywords noticed!

The same description meta tag rules apply to keyword meta tags, but the number of characters varies from 874 to 1000, so it is best to keep keyword meta tags to somewhere in between the two.

When it comes to your home page and keywords,  any word or phrase, or variation of a word or phrase, that fits your site content can & should be included in that page somehow, if at all possible, keeping limitations previously mentioned in mind.

Frequency plays a part in search engine placement.

The term "frequency" would be interpreted as "number of keyword occurrences divided by the number of words per page".  If your page is as concise as possible with only the most common and unique keywords that fit your site content, you'll most likely give your site placement a boost.

ALT TEXT

Alt Text for your images is a must!

Not only does this add to keyword density, but it allows a person who is not viewing graphics to know what they would be looking at had there been a graphic there.

SPELLING

If you fail to check your spelling you'll miss out on a good share of your potential audience.  Search engines cannot and do not correct spelling.  So, this is up to you and it's as simple as using the spell checker that is probably a part of the program you're writing your html code with.  After all the work you did to optimize your site you just can't afford to skip this step!
